Tuesday’s pair of double-headers in Atlanta and Boston give us a total of 17 games on the MLB Schedule meaning 34 starting pitchers ready to take the mound many of which will bounce back for a second start later this week. With so many options to choose from, there are multiple ways to give your fantasy team a boost with a streaming or spot starter. Here’s my quick top 5 options for Tuesday:

Possible Pickups

Zack Wheeler-New York Mets: (47.2% owned in ESPN leagues) How big a prospect and how anticipated his arrival are can easily be seen by the fact that he’s already almost 50% owned. He’s expected to join the Mets six-man rotation and should be able to stick in the Majors as long as he lives up to his lofty expectations. From what I’ve seen and heard, he deserves the hype and should be your #1 pickup for the day.

May 15, 2013; Los Angeles, CA, USA; Washington Nationals starter Ross Detwiler (48) delivers a pitch against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Ross Detwiler-Washington Nationals: (12.8%) Detwiler was solid if not spectacular in his first start back off the DL which is about all you could ask since he came back at Coors Field. Detwiler gets the Phillies for this start on Tuesday. His ERA is still a solid 3.02 but he does have a high WHIP at 1.42. He’s definitely a solid option, but tread carefully.

Jeremy Bonderman-Seattle Mariners: (0.5%) After getting shelled in his first start, Bonderman has allowed just one run on six hits in his last two starts spanning 14 shutout innings. He shut out Houston for eight innings his last time out and looks to continue his success in LA against the Angels. He’s opposed by Joe Blanton who comes in 1-10, so at least a win should be a solid possibility.

Alfredo Figaro-Milwaukee Brewers: (0.2%) Figaro has been inconsistent but did have a nice outing last time against the Marlins allowing just three hits and no walks while striking out four in seven shutout innings. Figaro faces the strikeout-prone Astros Tuesday.

Alfredo Aceves-Boston Red Sox: (0.0%) If you really want to roll the dice, Aceves has allowed just one earned run in each. He’s allowed just 11 hits in those 12 innings including a four-hit, six-inning performance in Tampa last week. He faces the Rays again Tuesday afternoon in Game 1 of the double-header.

Monday’s the start of a fresh week in fantasy baseball and the right starting pitching pickup can help you start with a bang on June 17. Starters who go on Monday typically start again either Saturday or Sunday at the end of the week two creating a double pile of points for those with weekly roster locks. Each day, we look at starting pitchers (archive here) who are available in 50% or more of ESPN leagues and can give you a boost in their scheduled start. Here’s my pickups for Monday:

Possible Pickups

Bud Norris-Houston Astros vs Chicago White Sox: (7.4%) Norris has allowed more than three earned runs in only one of his last ten starts. At home, he’s 3-2 with a 2.28 ERA in his eight starts. He’ll face the White Sox who are in the bottom five in the league in runs, batting average, OBP, and slugging percentage. Houston took the first two games of this four-game set and Norris will look to close it strong as they finish on Monday with Chicago.

May 19, 2013; San Diego, CA, USA; San Diego Padres starting pitcher Andrew Cashner (34) against the Washington Nationals at Petco Park. Mandatory Credit: Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

Andrew Cashner-San Diego Padres @ San Francisco Giants: (9.2%) In his last start, Cashner held the Braves to two runs on six hits in eight innings picking up his fifth win of the year and lowering his ERA to 3.52. He’ll face the Giants who he’s thrown 10 innings against this year allowing three runs in ten innings, giving up seven hits, and going 1-1. The whole Padres rotation is clicking right now while the Giants lineup remains a bit depleted by injury.

Dillon Gee-New York Mets @ Atlanta Braves: (3.5%) In his last three starts, Gee has allowed a run in each while pitching 21 innings. He’s been effective against the Yankees, Nats, and Cardinals, so facing the Braves lineup shouldn’t be overly daunting. However, Atlanta did rough him up earlier this year so proceed with caution if Gee is your plug-and-play of the day.

Dan Straily-Oakland Athletics @ Texas Rangers: (9.7%) Straiy has faced the Rangers twice this season getting hammered at home his first time out, but then breaking through in his next outing allowing no runs and two hits in seven innings. He’ll face them in Arlington again Monday. Including that start against Texas, he’s allowed just eight runs in his last five starts while going 3-0 with a 2.20 ERA. The Rangers are never an easy lineup to face, but I think Straily will again be up to the task.
