Caleb Williams is one of the most touted college prospects that we have seen in recent memory. The former Oklahoma and now Heisman-winning USC quarterback is expected to be the number one overall pick in next year's NFL Draft, as well as your dynasty draft where your tanking dreams may become reality.
However, Williams threw a wrench in your plans by saying that his decision to declare will be "in the moment" he did say his original dream was to be a three-year quarterback and then enter the draft, but the team that holds the number one overall pick may be the deciding factor in whether or not WIlliams stays at USC with Lincoln Riley.
The team that is expected to secure the prize as the worst team in the league is the Arizona Cardinals, a team that has seen struggles, injury, and general lack of success from fellow former Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray. There was also an NFLPA report a while back that had the Cardinals rated as one of the worst franchises in the league when it came to just about every category.
For Williams, a player who is looking to have a successful career and be the next great quarterback in the NFL, Arizona at the moment is not the place that most players, especially Heisman Trophy-winning players, want to go.
So, if your team is unfortunately projected to finish last, or if you can trade into the top spot of your league's rookie draft, how should you play this situation with the potential generational quarterback?

1. Assume Caleb Williams is going to declare
While this is a tricky situation to say the least, you have probably already stocked up on 2024 first-round picks if you had hoped to go out and get Williams, and there is no need to dump your first-rounders just yet. It is still likely that he will end up making the decision to be the number one overall pick, even if Arizona does take the spot as the worst team in the league.
We have also seen quarterbacks successfully refuse to sign with teams that they are drafted to, and with NIL, Williams has all of the bargaining power to threaten a team like Arizona not to draft him, or to trade that selection since he can just go right back to college and make similar money.
And even if he stays in college, there are still great players to take in this year's draft, Quinn Ewers, Drake Maye, Marvin Harrison Jr., or Brock Bowers are all great alternatives if you have to wait until 2025. While Williams may just be leagues ahead of those guys in terms of guaranteed fantasy success, it is still a solid class to choose from.
While we also have to prepare for worst-case scenario here, we have heard quarterbacks not immediately declare even though we all know they will. Williams delayed his transfer decision to USC as long as possible, and even played in Oklahoma's bowl game before following Riley. Williams most likely is saying this to make the discussion not about his draft stock, but rather about his team's focus on winning a national championship.

2. Still stock up on 2024 selections
This may be a blessing in disguise if you are looking to make trades to get picks from teams that may finish at the bottom of your league. Rather than acting like trading for that pick is trading for Williams himself, there is now the question of how valuable is that pick and you can use that at the negotiation table.
If you are looking to trade your first rounder however, your pick got a bit less valuable with this news, so it goes both ways here, but this greatly benefits those looking to get more picks for this year's class. Williams aside, you may be able to now get picks with the intention of acquiring a Harrison or a Bowers for much cheaper.
This all depends on your position in the league, if you have the assets to make a move, or if you are the one tanking, but still focus on giving yourself a chance to get him, especially if you need a quarterback. Williams is a can't-miss fantasy player the same way a guy like Trevor Lawrence was. He is a solution to your quarterback issues for the next decade-plus for your team. This makes him a player worth giving up assets for, and fits perfectly if you are in one of the many leagues with the Superflex option.
Do what you have to do to put yourself in a position to get a player of this caliber, and if he stays another year, take the picks you just got trying to get Williams and trade back for some 2025 first-rounders, if possible.

3. Keep an eye on USC, and which NFL team may be the worst
Two teams are majorly affecting his decision, USC football, and who will hold the number one pick in the draft. Williams seems to want to go to a franchise that will put him in a position of success, and that will make it worthwhile to trade NIL money for NFL money.
If a franchise gets the pick and Williams knows he will be doomed if he declares, he will be inclined to stay with the Trojans and hold out for a team that has a good foundation the following year. It is unclear which teams he considers to be great franchises, but some teams are much more obvious than others as good spots for a quarterback.
You also have to consider whether or not USC wins a national championship this year, if they go out and win it all, he may feel as if he has nothing left to prove or accomplish at the college level, and will decide to go out on top. However, if they lose in heartbreaking fashion just short of a title, then he may feel that there is unfinished business, and return to that team to finish the job.
So do your due diligence as the owner of a dynasty team, and keep tabs on this situation as much as possible, Getting this quarterback could be a league-winning move, especially if you are a quarterback away from really putting yourself above the rest of the league. He still has yet to make his decision, but he most likely will be putting on an NFL uniform next year, and you may just have the chance to put him in your lineup if you play it smart.
RECENT NEWS FROM FANTASY CPR
It may just be a bumpy roller coaster depending on what statement Williams makes next about his upcoming decision, but as long as you prepare for the next couple of drafts properly, then you will be just fine in your quest to get this prospect and build your dynasty around him.
