The Denver Broncos made the surprising announcement that they would be benching Russell Wilson for the final two games of the regular season and have Jarrett Stidham under center. This is big news for fantasy football as most leagues have their championship this week and the Broncos have a pretty good matchup against a Chargers defense that hasn't been great this season.
The absence of Wilson will have a ripple effect throughout the entire offense and we take a closer look at who should be left in fantasy football lineups and who should be moved to the bench.
Denver Broncos Tight Ends
The Broncos tight ends have not been much of a factor this season for fantasy football. The starter is Adam Trautman who hasn't had more than three targets in a game since Week 5. I don't expect the Broncos to want to throw much so there isn't any reason to start any tight ends this week from the Denver Broncos.
Javonte Williams
If there is one player that probably benefits from Russell Wilson moving to the bench, it is running back Javonte Williams. He got off to a slow start as he worked his way back from an ACL injury but starting in Week 8 he looked to turn a corner as he had 20+ carries in back to back weeks with almost 80 rushing yards each game and one receiving touchdown.
The past few weeks, he hasn't gotten the same workload with only 23 rushing attempts the past two weeks and just over 50 rushing yards combined. He did have a touchdown last week against the Patriots which helped save his week.
With Stidham under center, the Broncos should look to get Williams 20+ carries but whether he is able to be productive will be determined by the quarterback. If Stidham can't move the ball through the air, the Chargers are going to load up the box to slow Williams.
Courtland Sutton/Jerry Jeudy/Marvin Mims/Brandon Johnson
The wide receivers have the biggest question marks as their game is going to be determined by Jarrett Stidham. The Broncos likely are going to be without Courtland Sutton this week as he is in the concussion protocol and this should open up a bigger role for Brandon Johnson.
If Sutton is unavailable, the Chargers are going to focus on shutting down Jerry Jeudy and if there is one player that is worth taking a chance on who could be a sleeper, it is Marvin Mims. The rookie wide receiver has had some big games this season, like in Week 2 and Week 3 when he combined to have 186 receiving yards. Last week against the Patriots, he had three receptions for 63 yards on four targets.
The Chargers number two cornerback this season has been Michael Davis, who has struggled and teams have typically thrown his direction. In the game against the Bills, Gabe Davis was heavily involved and responded with four receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown.
