The word 'backup' should be taken with a grain of salt.

Khalil Herbert, Chicago Bears

Another running back who is the No. 2 guy behind an incoming free agent? Seems like a pattern.

The Chicago Bears signed D'Andre Swift to a big deal right as the gates opened for the free-agent signing period and while Swift was much better in 2023 with the Philadelphia Eagles than he ever was with the Detroit Lions, there's no guarantee he will be that player with the Chicago Bears.

The Bears are going to likely have Caleb Williams at quarterback to begin the season and despite his projected output as a professional, defenses are likely going to stack the box and make him prove himself at first, meaning Swift could get bottled up to begin the season and have to shoulder a big load.

Khalil Herbert has been a terrific backup for this team and you could make the argument that he's been the team's most efficient back for the past three seasons. He has averaged nearly five yards per carry for his career and has started 12 games for the team, earning plenty of playing experience.

Next. Sleeper RBs. Sleeper rookie RBs to begin keeping tabs on. dark

While other fantasy players jump on Swift looking to capitalize on the numbers he posted last year in a different city within a much better rushing attack, Herbert is the safer choice and one who could produce handsomely for your team as the season grinds on.
