Indianapolis Colts: 5 RB options to replace Jonathan Taylor
By Derek Hryn
Evan Hull
Rookie fifth-round pick Evan Hull has shown promise this preseason as a pass catcher, and working in for reps as a change-of-pace back. He looks to be an exciting candidate for rushing production in the Colts offense. To what degree? No one can truly say. He is No. 10 on Northwestern's all-time leading rushing list with 2,417 yards, and eighth in yards from scrimmage (3,268). Hull is the closest thing that we’ve seen to something comparable to Christian McCaffrey’s Stanford days. He showcased burst and receiving skills that could allow him to seamlessly fill a starting role for Indianapolis.
That said, Hull's 5-foot-10, 201-pound frame might prevent him from handling a full RB1 workload. While he deserves consideration, he projects more as a complement rather than a workhorse at this stage of his development. Relying on him as a 10 to 20-touch weapon could be asking too much too soon from the first-year talent, but the ceiling for him at the moment is very exciting.
Indianapolis lacks capable options on their current depth chart. Moss and Jackson have their own limitations, while Hull is an intriguing talent, albeit unproven and undersized. All have potential roles to play, but none can truly fill Taylor's 17.6 attempts-per-game shoes. The Colts need to scour the field for external options like Hunt or Fournette, and even that might not be enough to account for Taylor's numbers and overall usage.
One thing's for certain, the Colts have their work cut out for them leading up to the regular season. We'll just have to wait and see what transpires from now until their September 10 matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
