Preseason rankings for all 32 projected starting kickers
By Jaren Kawada
10. Daniel Carlson, Las Vegas Raiders
2023 rank: 24
Field goals: 26-30 (87%)
Extra points: 32-32 (100%)
Carlson came crashing back down to Earth after three strong seasons from 2020 to 2022. While his struggles were largely due to the horrid quarterback play of Jimmy Garoppolo and Aidan O'Connell, Carlson finished with his fewest field goal attempts, makes and overall points since 2019. While the insertion of Gardner Minshew is not exciting on paper, his kicker in 2023 — Matt Gay — finished in the top five. Carlson is primed for a bounce-back year.
9. Younghoe Koo, Atlanta Falcons
2023 rank: 15
Field goals: 32-37 (87%)
Extra points: 27-28 (96%)
Since joining Atlanta in 2019, Koo has become one of the premier kickers in the league with high-volume field goal attempts balancing out a lack of extra points. How he is affected by the new-look offense remains to be seen but he figures to see an uptick in usage with an improved roster. His accuracy has always been on point, never dipping below 86.5 percent since becoming a full-time starter, but his value has always been leg strength with a career 74 percent clip from beyond 50 yards. He's as reliable as it gets and should return to the top 10 in 2024.
8. Evan McPherson, Cincinnati Bengals
2023 rank: 14
Field goals: 26-31 (84%)
Extra points: 40-40 (100%)
Following a slight down year in 2022, McPherson rebounded from an accuracy perspective in 2023 but still lacked the volume to become a major fantasy player. Regardless, the 25-year-old signed a lucrative extension in the offseason to keep him in Cincinnati through the 2027 season. McPherson has never truly had the volume to be a top-five option but long range kicks have been the base of his value with 10 or more attempts from 50 or more yards in two of his three seasons.
7. Jason Sanders, Miami Dolphins
2023 rank: 11
Field goals: 24-28 (86%)
Extra points: 57-58 (98%)
Along with the Miami offense, Sanders' career has taken off under Mike McDaniel's tenure. Consistency has been an issue for him at times but despite just 28 field goal attempts in 2023, Sanders ended the year with 130 points, the second-most of his career. While his 2020 campaign does not seem like one he will ever top, 2023 was a nice rebound season for the veteran.
6. Cairo Santos, Chicago Bears
2023 rank: 3
Field goals: 35-38 (92%)
Extra points: 31-33 (94%)
Santos' 136 points in 2023 were the most of his 10-year career and made even more impressive given his 92 percent hit rate on 38 field goal attempts. There was not much he could have done to be any better last season, making it difficult to see how he improves in 2024. However, the offense will be significantly better with Caleb Williams under center, though that could be a double-edged sword with his high usage traded in for more touchdowns.
